Character Name: Kazuya Minegishi
Canon: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked
Canon Point: End of the sixth day, before he chooses which path to take
Background/History: Here!

Personality: Like most teenagers, Kazuya is quite standoffish. Complete strangers are normally met with a wall of either brusqueness or formal politeness, depending upon who they are. Even those that he is close to, he can sometimes be cold without meaning to be. It's not because he's intentionally a jerk - although some may disagree otherwise - but simply that he's just generally... awkward. When it comes to other people, he has a bit of a hard time seeing things from their perspective, such as, if something terrible has happened to someone, he can sympathise with their tragedy, but he can't empathise, as such, he tends to dispense advice or opinions that comes across as insensitive or cold.

This is probably why he tends to lean on the quiet side as well. When interacting with others, Kazuya is happier allowing his two more vocal friends carry the majority of the conversation, interjecting only when directly asked for his opinion, or if he thinks of something relevant and/or important. This does mean he succeeds in fading into the background a little, and although he is placed as the de facto leader of the group, is happy enough to let Atsuro plan what they should do next. The only time he really speaks up and takes charge is during battle, where social grace isn't, thankfully, a requirement, and he can be as blunt and harsh as he wants.

And blunt and harsh he is in battle. While he is usually a very calm individual, in battle he's overcome with emotion. This doesn't cloud his judgement any, but as these are ordinary teenagers thrown up against powerful demons, having a frantic, desperate air around them is to be expected. He yells and screams and lashes out wildly against his enemies, throwing his everything into battling demons and attacking them with a single-minded savagery for his, and his friends', survival. There's absolutely nothing refined about it, and yet, he isn't mindless in his desperation. In the manga especially, Kazuya shows a frightening ability to attack his enemies in imaginative ways, cottoning onto their weaknesses quickly, and disregarding his injuries to keep on fighting. Even with his side split open and him on the verge of death from blood loss, Kazuya still musters the strength to beat an Ogre into submission with a metal pole of all things. In short, Kazuya's a terrifying beast in battle, and represents a human's self-preservation instinct in all of its unpleasant forms.

In a way, the lockdown has hardened Kazuya even further. While before it, he was, as mentioned above, standoffish to a fault, the lockdown has introduced wariness and paranoia into his personality. With demons able to take the form of humans prowling the streets, as well as dangerous humans killing others out of insanity, greed, or desperation, there is literally nowhere safe for him and his friends to go. Sleeping on cold floors, having to keep watch for monsters in the night, fighting for their lives everyday with a literal death clock hanging over their heads - it's enough to wear down even the most stoic of people, and even Kazuya is not immune to the wearing effects. He's hyper-vigilant towards anything he perceives as a threat, and if one makes one wrong move that implies danger towards him and his friends, his back will be up and he'll be half a step from retaliation if need be.

In short, survival is Kazuya's main source of motivation. He doesn't care about God or demons or whatever scheme his cousin has cooked up - he just wants the lockdown to end, and for him and his friends to return to their earlier, simple, safe lives. If he has to pound some Bel demons into the dirt to get back to that normal life, then he'll do it without a shred of hesitation.

However, fighting for his survival doesn't make him blind to other people's plight. Throughout the game, Kazuya would receive emails predicting the events of that day, and more often than not, they would predict deaths, either individual or mass deaths of up to five hundred people, and he and his friends would immediately try to stop it. Even with their own Death Clocks informing them of their deaths on that same day, they will still go out of their way to save the other person from their own predicted death. As standoffish and rough as Kazuya is, he does genuinely wish to help other people survive the nightmare they're trapped in as well, and he fights for their survival just as desperately as his own.

But, helping them keep their lives is the extent of his kindness, as when it comes to emotional troubles and anguish, Kazuya is a lot less... helpful. Again, this links back to his 'can sympathise, but not empathise' trait, where he is prone to blurting out the wrong thing, or being insensitively blunt in delicate matters. An example would be where he bluntly asks Haru why she is suicidal, without giving thought into how she would feel about being asked such a personal question (she didn't react to it very well, for obvious reasons). So, while Kazuya is a pretty good guy to depend on if you're in physical danger, it would be wise to choose someone else to allay your emotional and mental woes, as he would sooner make them worse, than better.

Not from a lack of trying, though. When it comes to his friends, and the allies he makes throughout the game, Kazuya does try to help them with their emotional conflict. Awkwardly, but he does try. His friends are the most precious things to him during the lockdown, and while they meet many allies throughout the game, Atsuro and Yuzu are those that he holds onto the tightest. They act as his support system throughout the lockdown, because Kazuya finds it easier to focus on their safety, than ruminating over his own dilemma of being a candidate for King of Bel. With so much responsibility being pressed onto him by various people, the Shomonkai, Naoya, Yuzu, and even Atsuro, it's no surprise that Kazuya prefers to delay choosing on what viewpoint to take under the excuse of watching out for his friends.

He also has a bit of dark humorous streak in him. While he doesn't openly joke about terrible events in an effort to play them off, he is prone to using wry humour to soften the edge of them a little. This does mean he comes across as a bit of a sarcastic little shit at times, but he isn't being genuinely offensive or cruel - it's just how he deals with traumatic events. If he can't punch it out of existence, he tries to reduce its power over him by joking about it instead.

So to summarise: Kazuya is your run-of-the-mill standoffish teenager who was dragged into a literal hell and becomes understandably traumatised by it. He's paranoid of most strangers, will fight tooth and nail for his and his friends' survival, yet still somehow manages to keep a human part of him alive with his concern over the safety of other people trapped in the same hell as him. He's a genuinely nice person who's stuck in a hole full of monstrous people, and his wary personality reflects this.

Note: Kazuya has been canon updated, so his personality and strengths have changed slightly.

Sample Entry: Ancient thread is ancient
Sample Entry Two: "A-Ah...achoo!!"

The noise echoed uncomfortably around him, and Kazuya flinched as he rubbed at his nose, his lips pressed into a thin line. This was absolutely horrible... while Tokyo had been stifling hot, Haven was dreary and wet, and Kazuya was in, no way, shape, or form, prepared for the damp conditions. He could easily foresee himself dying from pneumonia or hypothermia before the week was over, and that was a morbidly hilarious thought, that he would survive countless battles against demons intent on killing him, only to be brought down by a cold.

"Heh, bet Naoya didn't predict that..." Kazuya muttered to himself, giving a loud sniff as he carefully moved aside some rubble. He was looking for food, and he found some here yesterday, so he was hoping there was some more, but thus far, his efforts were in vain. He was finding jack shit.

Heaving a sigh, Kazuya tossed a broken piece of brick aside before pushing himself to his feet. Maybe he should just try and find somewhere out of this rain for a bit, try and dry off-

"Ah-Achoo!!"

-and stop sneezing.

He was being so loud, the noise echoing everywhere... it's bound to draw attention...
